Obesity is by far one of the biggest problems experienced by the United States today. More than 1/3, a total of 35.7% of U.S. Adults are obese. Also, obesity and disease are closely related to each other, with obesity being a leading cause of diabetes, stroke, and heart disease.
The financial cost of obesity in the United States is also quite staggering. The USA spent a total of 144 billion dollars in 2008 for people who were overweight and obese. The sad part is that obesity is most often a genetic condition that people are predisposed to from birth. A child’s parents most often pass the obesity genes onto their kids and the cycle of obesity continues.
As far as ethnicity is concerned, African American people experienced a higher prevalence of obesity (36.9%) than Caucasian men do. Also, Hispanic American people are frequently more obese than Caucasian men as well at 31.9% of the total population obese. Asian people were the least likely of all ethnic groups to be obese, with only 11.6% obesity rate in 2010.
In the United States today, there are anti-obesity efforts emerging to try and put a stop to the contributing factors of obesity. Movements like banning soda and junk food from school cafeterias, educating people as to healthy eating habits and options, promoting exercise, and encouraging people to live a healthy drug free lifestyle is becoming more commonplace than ever before. In fact, there have even been some laws in place that restrict certain schools from offering junk food to kids.
As far as the military is concerned, a whopping 27% of applicants ages 17-24 were too obese to be a part of the armed forces. That’s a total of 9 million adults in this young age group that aren’t allowed entrance to serve our wonderful country.
In a worldwide view, the United States has one of the highest rates of obesity of any country in the world. Only Mexico has beaten the United States in terms of obesity rates. For being so rich and powerful, we sure haven’t been able to change the course of history as far as obesity rates are concerned.
But what’s the root cause of obesity really? Most medical scientists claim that obesity is caused by genetic predisposition, and that there’s really not much a doctor can do to help someone that’s genetically obese. But for some people, obesity is definitely caused by an unhealthy lifestyle and poor choice of living habits. Often times, exercise, healthy eating, and abstaining from drugs and alcohol is all they need to slim down and become healthy again.
