How To Help A Loved One Overcome Alcohol Addiction

Surprisingly, helping a loved one move through, and beyond, alcohol addiction can in fact be more challenging than being the addicted individual yourself. While family members undergo the stress and turmoil of watching the life of a loved one unravel, the addicted person themselves is often too medicated or intoxicated to be aware of the chaos and consequences of their addiction unfolding. Intervention An intervention is when an addiction professional engages with the addicted individual over the phone, or in person, to help them fully see how alcoholism is affecting their life, and the lives of those around them. (S)he will help the addicted person connect with the positives of accepting responsibility for the problem, and admitting to treatment, whilst also acknowledging the potential pain of not moving forward in this way – i.e. addiction doesn’t usually get better on its own. The ultimate intention of the intervention is to help the addicted person take responsibility for themselves- although difficult at first this is kinder in the long run, and helps reset boundaries and expectations among family members to a functional place. Dependency, whether on substances, or other people, doesn’t work – swapping dependence on a substance for dependence on a person doesn’t work…and neither does swapping one substance for another. Ultimately, no one can be forced into rehab, or forced to stay in treatment once there – recovery is something we each have to take personal responsibility for- and want for ourselves, and no-one else. Home Detox Some clinics offer the option of a prescribed medication detox at home. A registered nurse – usually an addiction specialist – visits in person, carries out a medical assessment, and provides the required medication to be administered by a carer or other responsible adult. Helping a loved one through a home detox allows you to provide a greater level of personal support than would normally be possible in a residential rehab setting, where the individual is away from the family environment. Help may also be required to ease and comfort the individual undergoing detox beyond the environmental triggers that occur as the detox progresses. This can often be a challenge in the home environment – as this is often where the triggers themselves were initially established. Help Them See The Underlying Drivers Reassure your loved one: – They are not broken – They are not unlovable – Recovery from addiction IS possible, and millions are living that truth every day – Help is available Try explaining to your loved one, that recovery WILL in fact be easier when they’re in a treatment centre, removed from their usual environment, since the environmental...

Causes, Symptoms and Diagnosis of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis, a condition which causes pain in your heel. It is located on the plantar fascia which is a ligament connecting the heel of the foot to the front of the foot. Its job is to help support the arch of the foot when walking. Most Common of Orthopedic Complaints It is perhaps one of the most common of orthopaedic complaints yet can be treated at home with any of these 8 great tips. The plantar fascia ligaments will experience a lot of wear and tear in daily life. Typically these ligaments will act as a shock absorber and support the arch of the foot. If you put too much pressure upon your feet it can damage and tear these ligaments. The plantar fascia can then become inflamed and this inflammation can cause heel to be painful and it can be stiff to walk. It can be caused if you are overweight or struggling with obesity. The increased pressure of the weight on the plantar fascia ligaments can be very painful. Pregnant women often complain of heel and ligament pain of this sort during late pregnancy. Long Distance Runners Also Have This Condition Long distance runners may also have the condition due to the wear and tear that they give their feet. Jobs that require a lot of standing are another cause. High arches or flat feet may also be a cause of this condition. The condition is very painful and there will be stiffness in both the bottom of the heel and pain in the area. This usually develops over the course of time. Generally, it only affects one foot but in rare cases it may affect both feet. Many people describe the condition as feeling a dull pain. Still others say that the pain is sharp or they notice a burning sensation. It is generally more painful in the morning upon awakening and getting out of bed. It may also happen if the person has been sitting or lying down for a period of time. Stair climbing can be very challenging. Plantar Fasciitis Can Be Treated Successfully Doctors will do a physical to see why the foot or heel area is so tender. They will note the exact location of the pain and have you flex your foot to see if the pain is eased or worse after or during flexing. The doctor will also check for any redness or swelling. The doctor will check strength as well as nerves by checking the reflexes. Muscle tone and sense of touch will also be noted as will coordination and balance. If the doctor has any other concerns they...

Suggested Nutritional Requirements While Treating Mesothelioma

Found in the lining of the body’s organs, mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer and begins in the mesolial cells. The inner lining found within the body’s organs are designed to help protect them from external threats. When this lining begins to weaken because of abnormal cell growth (i.e. cancerous cells), the organs are weakened and become prone to injury and disease. For mesothelioma patients to remain healthy and battle against this rare form of cancer, it is important to have a proper diet in place. Let’s take a look at important nutritional requirements for mesothelioma patients to implement within the article below or you can also visit Mesocare.org for more info. Water It all begins and ends with hydration. If the body is not being hydrated, it becomes impossible to deal with the cancer that is spreading through the body. The immune system requires fuel and assistance against all of the bad toxins that are present internally. If these toxins are not eradicated appropriately, the body will not be able to fight against the cancer. Water has all of the components required to flush out these toxins and help the immune system recuperate from its fight against the cancer. It is important to drink at least eight glasses of water as a mesothelioma patient or more if recommended to do so by a physician. Read more about the benefits of water here. Salmon Protein is critical for the body and this comes in different forms. One of these forms would be salmon, which is packed with nutrients and is high in protein. If you are a vegetarian, it is appropriate to get your protein from other sources such as beans and peanuts. The goal with this nutritional change is to get as much protein as possible. It is best to eat at least your bodyweight’s worth of protein (in grams) on a daily basis to help the body fight against the mesothelioma. Oranges and Berries Fruits and vegetables are one of those proven options that are excellent for fighting against almost any disease. Cancer is no different as oranges and berries are packed with the right kind of nutrients that are required in helping the body. The immune system requires these nutrients in order to rejuvenate and remain healthy. Orange and berries are great because they are packed with those antioxidants that are required for reducing the impact of the toxins present in the body. Make sure every meal has some component of oranges and/or berries in it to help the body get its require dose. Smaller Meals This is not a specific food, but a way...

Workout Plans for Every Individual Are Very Important An individualized workout plan will complement the body condition and fitness level of the individual. It will be prepared by taking into consideration the strengths and limitations of a person. The individual will have to go through a series of exercises, which are based on calisthenics and endurance, in order to achieve any fitness goal. A personal trainer will be able to instruct the individual on these parameters and assess the condition of the person along the way. The individual will have to go through a series of interviews in determining if he or she is physically fit to perform certain exercises and moves, which would be included in the overall program. Massage Chairs Vs Handheld Massagers

Massage Chairs Vs Handheld Massagers

Massage chairs have become more popular because they provide basically the same effect as a professional masseuse in the comfort of their own home. A lot of massage chairs also have different settings for different massage styles. A massage chair is one of the best self-pampering equipment out there and getting in to one after a long days work can simply melt your problems away. If you like having massages, getting a massage chair makes more sense and can even save you some money in the long run compared to getting a massage every week. But recently, there have been a lot of handheld massage devices that has a more targeted approach which a lot of people like because there are times that you only want a foot or back massage and a massage chair, for the most part, targets the whole body. So here are a few things that one should take in to consideration before choosing whether to go with a massage chair or a handheld massager. Portability When it comes to portability, handheld massagers win hands down. The bulky and usually plugged in massage chair simply is not travel friendly. The father of my friend situated his massage chair in front of their T.V. and that is where it stayed for years until it finally broke down. It just isn’t easy to move it around and handheld massagers can be brought anywhere. For portability, handhelds win. Targeted Effect As one can imagine, a massage chair does the whole thing. That is well and good except that it also has an uncanny characteristic of not hitting a body part as good as the other. This can be a problem if the user really needs a good massage on hard to reach areas and that is where handheld massagers win yet again. Handhelds can be used to reach areas of the body that massage chairs simply cannot. For targeted effect, handhelds win yet again. Price This is where things get interesting. This will depends entirely on preference because not everyone wants a whole body massage so they go for handheld massagers but for those who wants the whole body experience, shell out the dough for a massage chair. As I said, it depends on preference because if you want a whole body massage and you bought a lot of targeted massagers, you might end up spending more than you would if you bought a massage chair but if you only want a rubdown on certain areas, a massage chair might not be an ideal purchase for you. Durability In the topic of durability, massage chair tends to last...

How Can a Tens Machine Relieve Your Pain?

How Can a Tens Machine Relieve Your Pain?

A Tens machine is a small portable, battery operated device which should be worn on the body. The device is stuck by sticky pads to the skin and small electrical pulses are transferred to the body. These pulses are like little electrical shocks which are effective in easing certain types of pains. Tens machines are manufactured to affect the way pain signals travel through the brain. Pain signals travel to the brain via the nerves and spinal cord. If these pain signals could be blocked by the tiny electrical shocks from the Tens machine, the brain will receive quite a few signals from the source of pain. This is the mechanism in the Tens machine. There are two methods used by the Tens machine to relive your pain effectively. 1. Pain Gating – The Tens machine would produce millions of small electrical impulses that would enter your body via the electrodes placed on the skin adjacent to the painful region. These electrical impulses are extremely fast and would overpower the slow pain impulses. They would travel quickly to the brain via the spinal cord and nerves. This is performed by high pulse impulses between 90-130 Hz. This is the most common method where the tens unit machine would be used. This is known as the gate control theory of pain. When the gate is open, pain messages get through to the brain and we feel the pain. When the gate is closed, these messages are barred from traveling to the brain and we don’t feel the pain. The Tens machine would stimulate the non-pain carrying impulses and close the gate. In such instances, the brain is busy dealing with the impulses that are received from the Tens machine that it has no time in accommodating the slower pain signals received from painful areas in the body. The same mechanism is at work when you rub an injured area in your body. It helps to lessen the pain to a certain extent. The gate control theory was revealed in 1965 by Melzack and Wall. The theory is based on smaller diameter nerve fibers which would carry pain signals through a gate mechanism. But when larger diameter nerve fibers go through the same gate, it could inhibit the transmission of smaller signals through the gate. Chemicals released in response to the pain stimuli such as endorphins can also influence whether the gate is opened or closed for pain signals. This is the other method of relieving your pain via a Tens machine. 2. Endorphin Release – As you are already aware, the pain gate could be shut by stimulating the release of endorphins...
